Looking at Big Al’s menu, you might think the food sounds good. But after your first bite, you’ll realize it’s way better than good – it’s great!! They serve breakfast and lunch only (breakfast all day on Saturday!) and they cater for events – think office party, birthdays, etc.
Big Al’s is located in Salemtown, a few minutes walk from Germantown. Open the door to the restaurant, and you’ll find a room that houses a small market of goods that Big Al uses in his dishes, tables for communal seating, and bar stools to let you peer into the open kitchen to watch Big Al work his magic.
For lunch, Big Al serves up specials ranging from pulled pork with homemade BBQ sauce, tropical jerk chicken, and fried catfish made with his Mama’s recipe. There are always specials on the chalkboard, so be sure to check that before you order.
We tried out Big Al’s for breakfast on a Saturday. They offer French Toast, homemade biscuits, pancakes, eggs, and lots more. We ordered the Big Al’s Breakfast (two eggs, biscuit, bacon, and hashbrowns) and the bacon biscuit (with fried egg and cheese). The biscuits were big and the perfect textural balance – fluffy on the inside with a crunchier crust on the top. The bacon was thick and flavorful, and the hashbrowns were to die for.
We’ll be back to try their lunch specials and some of their sweeter breakfast options soon!
