We’re always on the hunt for great lunch spots downtown, and Rae’s Gourmet Sandwich Shoppe is one of our top picks! They offer cold and hot sandwiches as well as soups and salads, if you’re looking for something a little lighter.
The menu draws inspiration from New Orleans with options like gumbo, po’boys, crab cakes, and Zapp’s chips. You’ll even find a full wall display of what looks to be100 different kinds of hot sauces. Take a few to your table to try.
This lunch hot-spot draws folks from all over downtown, so be ready to wait in line if you head there during peak hours. Once you get to the front of the line, the friendly staff will ask you, “How can we help you, baby?” in true New Orleans fashion.
On our last visit, we ordered the Friday special – a large crab cake served on a warmed bun and fully dressed with a side of homemade tartar sauce. Even though it was huge, we ate the whole thing! We also ordered a sandwich from their regular menu, the Hot Brown. The sandwich was packed with smoked turkey, bacon, tomato, and cream cheese on a toasted hoagie bun.
Don’t forget to order one of their famous brownies for dessert. People often call ahead to reserve theirs for their lunch order, so you know they’re good.
Find their daily specials on their Facebook page so you can plan ahead for your well deserved lunch break!
