Virago, part of the M Street restaurant group, might seem a little funny from the outside – where are all the windows? But when you walk in, you’ll get it – this place is all about the ambiance. From mood lighting with hanging lanterns to the spacing of the tables, every aspect of Virago’s design was carefully thought out in meticulous detail.
Virago offers Asian-fusion dishes with an upscale flare. Their combination of ambiance and interesting dishes earned them a spot in Open Table’s Top 100 Hot Spots in America list. It would be hard to argue with the more than 5 million reviews collected and reviewed by Open Table in the past year to create the list – Virago is definitely doing something right!
We recently went on a Tuesday to avoid the weekend crowds (if you’re going on a weekend, we highly recommend a reservation). We kicked off our meal with the wasabi guacamole served with tuna tartar, wasabi peas, fresno peppers, and rice puff crackers and the rock shrimp tempura in Korean-chile mayo. Our other favorites to share with the table are the crispy rice with spicy tuna and pop rocks and the V2 edamame that is wok charred with a sweet soy sauce. We could make a full meal from the appetizer menu alone!
For our main, we shared the fire crunch sushi roll with tempura shrimp and sriracha alongside the Chirashi Don – the chef’s daily selection served with rice, roe, and other additions. The presentation is beautiful – the artfully arranged assortment of fish is served over rice with avocado, veggies, and an assortment of flavorful roe all on top of a wood block.
Pair your meal with hot or chilled sake – you can choose from over 20 sake options on their cocktail menu. We recommend coming in on a Maki-Monday, when Virago offers certain rolls, cocktails, and sake at a 2-for-1 price. Talk about a deal!
