Before you visit and tour Thistle Farms, a social enterprise aimed to help women in Nashville and around the world, make a pit stop in the Thistle Stop Cafe for breakfast. Try the fresh start bowl and an iced tea with a pump of lavender – the perfect light summer breakfast. While you’re eating, be sure to notice the teacups hanging from the ceiling, each one representing a different story of hardship and healing, and the beautiful wood floors built with refurbished wood from Al Gore’s tobacco barn.
After our visit to Thistle Stop Cafe, we attended the Thistle Farms 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning meditation meeting, which is open to the public every week. This moving meditation allows residents, graduates, employees, volunteers, and visitors to come together to appreciate the Thistle Farms mission: Love Heals.
Thistle Farms is run by residents and graduates of Magdalene, a program for women who are survivors of prostitution, trafficking, and drug addiction. This social enterprise encompasses the Thistle Stop Cafe, Thistle Farms products, and a new global project called Shared Trade (more on this coming to the blog soon!).
Post-meditation, they offer a tour of the Thistle Farms facilities, where you’ll learn about how the Magdalene women and their fellow Thistle Farmers create their products by hand and use ingredients that are as good for the earth as they are for your body. We love the Rose Geranium Insect Repellent for fighting those summer mosquitoes and the lavender body balm.
You can find Thistle Farms products online or in stores both here in Nashville and across the country. Your Thistle Farms and Thistle Stop Cafe purchases directly benefit the women of the Magdalene program, allowing them to learn valuable job skills and be a part of a community of healing.
The Thistle is a root that can grow anywhere and survive anything. When in bloom, the thistle turns into a beautiful purple flower. This is where Thistle Farms gets its name: despite the hardship that life throws in the way, we can come out on the other side even more beautiful than before.
Visit Thistle Farms and be inspired by the incredible women who are stronger than thistles and even more beautiful than the thistle flower.
