Chauhan Ale & Masala House is Maneet Chauhan‘s most recent endeavor. You may recognize her from Food Network shows such as Chopped or Iron Chef America. We couldn’t be luckier that she chose Nashville for her newest venture, Chauhan Ale & Masala House, which brings Indian and Southern cuisine together in perfect harmony.
The restaurant is just outside of the Gulch on 12th Avenue, across from the former home of 12th and
Porter. Inside, the decor is beautiful with walls alternating between golds and reds, peacock feathers, and projected movies flickering in frames.
The beer and cocktail menu offers a variety of options, including local brews and creative cocktails. Our favorites were the Indian spice-infused beers, made in collaboration with Cool Springs Brewery. The saffron-infused pale ale was unique and refreshing, the perfect match for the meal to come.
For starters, we ordered the Masala Darma & Tandoori Bread, a selection of seasonal chutneys and flavored butters paired with freshly baked naan. With a little something for everyone, this appetizer is perfect for sharing with the table. We also tried the Hot Chicken Pakoras- crispy chicken tossed in a house blend spice mix with pepper sauce.
For the main course, we ordered the meat & three – Chauhan’s twist on the Southern classic that changes daily. Ours came with shrimp and vegetables cooked in a creamy coconut curry sauce, lentil soup, potatoes & green beans, plus the traditional rice and naan.
We also tried the Desi Fare – a build your own plate of protein (chicken, lamb, fish, paneer, or vegetables) and sauce (tikki masala, moilee, korma, and more). The table’s favorite was the chicken korma- chicken tossed in a cashew and saffron curry.
The Nashville Scene included Chauhan Ale & Masala house in the great place for a first date section of its recent “All You Need is Grub” story. We agree but think it’s a great spot for all occasions. The servings are generous and the food is delicious.
So take your special someone for a first (or 50th) date; bring your family next time they visit; go with your girlfriends before a night out on the town. Chauhan Ale & Masala House is sure to impress no matter what the occasion.
